On Monday the 9th of March, Rebecca and I headed over to the London Studios by Embankment for a recording of ITV’s Celebrity Squares. Thanks to Applause Store, I had two Priority tickets which gave us guaranteed entry to the show as well as a Spring Pass for 4 to a show of my choice that I could use before the end of April.

Upon arriving at the show, we had no idea who the ‘celebrities’ would be but we did know that Warwick Davis (Actor in Willow, Star Wars, Harry Potter) would be hosting and that was good enough for me! It was an incredibly decorated set, and cool to see all the behind-the-scenes action happening around the stage prior to the celebrities coming out and the recording commencing.

It turned out that the centre square was Jimmy Carr and the other 8 squares were filled with Tim Vine, Sarah Jane Crawford, Matt Forde, Tracy-Ann Oberman, Kerry Godliman, Joe Wilkinson, Joe Swash and Marek Larwood.

In case anyone doesn’t know, Celebrity Squares is a game of tic-tac-toe with 2 contestants playing to win money. Warwick Davis, the host, asks a celebrity a question and then the contestant has to decide whether or not the celebrity is saying the correct answer in order to win the square they chose (For a game of Tic Tac Toe, I’ve just made that really hard to understand!). It was somewhat nostalgic to watch as my Mum and I used to watch the American version, Hollywood Squares, with Whoopi Goldberg as the centre square back in the day.
Overall, it was really fascinating seeing how the show was filmed, re-doing punchlines and cuts. Particularly with Jimmy Carr’s constant interruptions and the not-safe-for-weekend-evening-television jokes, it will be interesting to watch how the team manage to string the show together.
As always, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the recording of Celebrity Squares and it was all very well organised by Applause Store- I look forward to hopefully getting more tickets and using my Spring Pass for future shows!
This episode of Celebrity Squares was aired on Sunday the 15th of March at 7pm.
